It’s impossibly difficult to talk about this past year without getting a little bit emotional–so many encouraging things happened over here at SDP and quite a few changes took place for our little family, too. 2013 began with a new and exciting endeavor–I became determined to shoot film, and to shoot it well. Film quickly became part of my workflow and has changed my approach to photography more than I could have imagined–it is now such an essential part of how I photograph weddings, how I interact with clients during sessions, and how I view and appreciate my own work. I love film deep, deep in my heart and can’t imagine my work without it.

This past year proved also to be my busiest, most exciting season yet–so much (SOOOOO MUCH!) joy, excitement, emotion, and sincerity in the stories I documented. So many kind and encouraging clients I got to meet and beautiful, beautiful places I got to visit. In 2013 I traveled to Austin, LA, Boston, Ohio, Maryland, Virginia, Philadelphia, and to all different parts of North Carolina, always with my camera in hand. I had the chance to shoot a courthouse elopement, to photograph farm weddings and backyard weddings and church weddings and destination weddings, and Sarah Der Photography even made its very first big move–all the way up to Boston, Massachusetts!

Now that New England is our home, Bryan and I are settling in to life in the city, a new job for him and making new friends for me, and working together to raise our new little puppy, Stout (who is super cute I MIGHT ADD). Boston is exciting, but spending 2013 with the people pictured above, in the wonderful South (which I have come to truly adore) was such a gift, and such a blessing.

(…cue tears!)

BUT 2014 is going to be pretty cool, too. Stout will gain about 70 pounds and become a giant (hopefully well behaved) goofy companion for us. Toulouse will settle into his role as Master of the Apartment and resident City Kitty. Bryan and I will explore New England and travel down south to see his little sister get married (…more tears!). And Sarah Der Photography will grow and plant seeds here in the city, hopefully meeting new couples and photographing weddings here in Boston, up in Maine, and all around New England…!

Cheers to the New Year! I certainly can’t wait to see what 2014 has in store for we Ders and thanks for keeping up with all that is new here at SDP!

Downtown Boston Elopement | Jessica + Bryan, in their apartment in the South End

(!!!) The original plan was this: to drive out of the city, and celebrate Jessica + Bryan’s sweet elopement in a warm, lovely greenhouse, a temporary escape from Boston’s cold, cold winter. Needless to say, the plans changed! It snowed so, so much the night before Jessica + Bryan’s elopement, so these two decided to tie the knot in their adorable little apartment in the South End, followed by a delicious catered lunch before flying out to a tropical island for their honeymoon! It felt so special to me, to be one of the very few people invited to witness J+B’s downtown Boston elopement, and that they did so in their sweet home was so neat. It was just such an intimate, sincere, moving morning for me, and I’m very happy for these two, indeed.

Also thanks so much, Boston, for pulling out all the stops for my first photography job! You sure made it tough on me… ;)

Brandi + David’s wedding was such a nice way to finish up my 2013 season, flying from Boston back down to Chapel Hill to photograph their mid-December church ceremony and barn reception. And isn’t it obvious, David’s reaction is one of my favorite’s by far–such excitement and joy to see Brandi walking down the aisle! I also loved all their Christmastime details–wreaths, ornaments, gold glitter…such fun! They also had a beautiful ceremony, heartwarming toasts, some crazy dancing, and a pretty awesome exit to boot. And I might add, in true Chapel Hill fashion (thanks, unpredictable southern weather!) it rained the entire day. Even through the rain and cold temperatures, these two were so at ease and simply thankful to be celebrating their wedding with all their friends and family–such a wonderful day! Congrats you two!

Oh, and a quick shout out to sweet Katherine, my amazing second shooter for the day! If you don’t follow her work, go check it out for sure!

I had such an enjoyable time photographing J + C’s downtown church wedding and Stockroom reception earlier this winter, and the weather was so kind to us–a warm, sunny, mild day in late November! Their friends and family were extra sweet, just so much fun to be around, and so many of the details of the day focused on the couple’s family history–old wedding photographs from their parents’ and grandparents’ wedding days, a piece of Jess’ grandmother’s wedding gown wrapped around her bouquet, and she wore a bracelet that’s over 100 years old, an heirloom on her mother’s side of the family! Even their wedding rings have been passed down in the families–so special! I’m happy to share a peek at their wedding day with you all, and congrats, you two!
